Abstract
In this research, we investigate the effect of human disturbance to the behaviour of Formosan Reeves's Muntjac (Muntiacus reevesi micrurus). The effect of two kinds of human disturbance, which separates came from visitor and staff, were sampled in six sites. Among 6 sites, two sites located in administration area mainly affect by staffs and four sites located in garden area mainly affect by visitors. There was a total of 101.5 observation hours during September to Decenber 2010, and total 240 muntjacs were recorded in six sites. The data show that the distance between muntjac and the edge of forest were 1.92~14.1m. Analysis of the relationship between the distances (muntjacs from edge of forest) and forest canopy closure percentage, showed a significant positive correlation(r 2=0.603, P<0.0001). Additionally, the alert distance of muntjac in administration area (21.82m) was shorter than garden area (38.24m), and there was a significant difference between them (T-test, P=0.001). The flight distance showed similar pattern with alert distance. However, it was 9.63 meters in administration area which was much shorter than flight distance in garden area (32.17 m) (T-test, P<0.0001). The data showed the behavior of muntjac was affected by human disturbance and other habitat factors, but it still need further analysis to provide better management strategy for muntjacs and tourists.
