Wood and Bamboo Identification

To accommodate the public’s needs, Taiwan Forestry Research Institute (TFRI) has collected 770 genera and 2393 species of domestic and foreign wood and bamboo specimens, and uses these specimens as references for comparison when identifying wood and bamboo, and set up a forest utilization service network as the basis for the identification service with the aim of improving the expertise and convenience of wood and bamboo identification knowledge and services.

Tree Age Determination

Tree age determination methods for dating annual tree-ring were based on the trunk/core samples of tree cross section. This method refers to species with obvious tree-ring formation of multi-year-grown ligneous plant in temperate zone. Based on methods of dendrochronology tree ages were determined. However, the growth of tree rings way be affected by stand density, environment, climate conditions changing over time. Therefore, the results of tree age determination would contain estimation errors. So, if the samples are non-specification species, we may refuse to determination.

Identification of Antrodia cinnamomea

Using 10 known components in Antrodia cinnamomea including 5 ergostanes (antcins C and K, and zhankuic acids A, B, and C), 4 lanostanes (sulphurenic acid, dehydrosulphurenic acid, eburicoic acid, and dehydroeburicoic acid), and 1 monophenyl (4,7-dimethoxy-5-methyl-1,3-benzodioxole) as standards, mycelia and basidiomes of A. cinnamomea can be differentiated.Basidiomes contained all 10 test components. Mycelia collected contained the 4 lanostanes and 4,7-dimethoxy-5-methyl-1,3-benzodioxole but not the 5 ergostanes.
