Maroon orioles (Oriolus traillii ardens Swinhoe) can generally be found on the borders of plantations merging with natural broad-leaved forests below 1,500 meters elevation in Taiwan. They like to fly, play, and search for food in open, unobstructed areas, such as stream valleys. They are distributed in patterns of disjointed spots in Taiwan; more in the east and south of the island than they are in the west and north. In southern mountainous regions, oriole populations can usually be found. From March of each year, the calls of male orioles can frequently be heard in the Shangping area; loud and resonating, from one side of a valley to the other.
