Many medicines converted from Compatothecin (CPT) via semi-chemical synthesis have been proven to cure many cancer diseases. The global market of these drugs reaches more than 20 billion US dollars a year. Homoharringtonine (HHT) found in slow growing Cephalotaxus species, has proven to be an effective drug to cure leukemia cancer. The USA market of these drugs reaches 13 billion US dollars a year. Cell cultures are not stable for maintaining in long-term subculture medium containing with plant growth regulators. Hairy root transformed with Agrobacterium rhizogenes grew rapidly in hormone free medium and potentially acted as natural factories to produce medicines, food flavoring, and other commercial products has been reported. The first year we established the method to induce transformed hairy roots of Nothapodytes foetida. Hairy root cultured step by step in flasks, 1-L wave bioreactor, and 2-L airlift bioreactor. CPT production in scaled up bioreactor was confirmed. Cephalotaxus wiloniana individuals with high content of cephalotaxine was selected and cultured in vitro. Two lines of hairy roots from stem explants transformed with A. rhizogenes AR15834 was obtained.
