Abstract

1.An Investigation of Sources and Recovery Mechanisms for Wood Waste Materials.
A. Project Objectives
(a)Outdoor Wood Waste Investigate windfall trees, broken branches, and driftwood caused by typhoons, establish points of supply, quantity of supply, items of supply, and other information for future use in biocarbon management systems.
(b)Household Wood Waste Investigate the details of the huge amount of wood waste disposed of by families in Taiwan and generate detailed information on points of supply, quantity of supply, items of supply for future use in biocarbon management systems.
(c)Industrial Wood Waste Investigate the amount of wood waste generated by business establishments in Taiwan and generate detailed information on points of supply, quantity of supply, and items of supply for future use in biocarbon management systems.
B. Important Work Items
The research content includes collection of information, inductive analysis, statistics on amount and sorting of wood waste, identification of points of supply, quantity of supply, items of supply, and other information for future use in biocarbon management systems.
(a)Collection of Information To understand the quantities and types of wood waste generated by domestic typhoons, household waste, and industrial waste, to collect relevant information from journals and magazines, as well as information and statistics from relevant government administrative agencies, including the Environmental Protection Administration, Construction and Planning Administration, and the Council of Agriculture, and to present these in a form for convenient observation and analysis.
(b)Organization and Statistical Analysis of Information on Wood Waste Quantities To statistically analyze information on amounts of wood waste from typhoons, household waste, and industrial waste and to calculate carbon stocks contained in these wastes.
(c)Establishment of a Database on Materials Sources and Supplies To understand domestic industrial wood waste management objectives of industrial management agencies in each county and municipality, including regulations, management agencies, recycling, and current status, as well as detailed information on wood waste producing units, including number of plants, supply points, supply quantities, and supply items.for future use in biocarbon management systems.
C. Expected Benefits
(a) In terms of academic merit, there are few studies on the quantities of wood waste in Taiwan. In this study, the sporadic literature of the past will be unified and the literature search expanded in scope to try to unify and analyze information on Taiwan’s outdoor, household, and industrial wood waste, showing a complete picture of Taiwan’s wood waste generation and recycling.
(b) In terms of environmental benefits, this study will quantify and statistically analyze the amount of wood waste in Taiwan and calculate its carbon sink value in order to understand the carbon content of wood waste, extend the life span of carbon stocks in wood waste, and reduce the release of carbon dioxide, thus reducing Taiwan’s contribution of greenhouse gasses and delaying the global warming aspect of climate change.

2.Development of the Modular Integrated Transportable Biochar Production System

Developing the Pilot Scale Multiple Hearth Furnace with a Continuous Feeding System for Mass Production of Biochar
Taiwan is rich in forest resources. The forest products can be converted into green chemicals and agricultural materials for wide application. Recently, biochar technology is developed to enhance the application of forest products. The final product is called biochar which can assist in retaining carbon, nutrients and water in soils.

In order to establish the re-use technology for woody biomass, and enhance the utilization efficiency of domestic forest products, this study is to develop a pilot scale biochar facility for mass production from woody materials in applying for farm chemicals and materials.

The objectives of this study are

1. Establishing a pilot scale multiple hearth furnace with a continuous feeding system for mass production of biochar to provide the information for future commercial design.

2. Assisting the users to establish the biochar industry, and promote the application of biochar. "
