Two kinds of fibers were selected to make handmade papers for mounting purposes. The pulping conditions were as follows:
Pineapple fiber preparation entailed adding NaOH 5% and digestion time of 4 h at liquor ratio of 10. Upon cooling, the fiber was washed with water and bleached with a single stage of sodium hypochlorite at 40℃ for 1 h. After washing the pulp, it was beaten with a Hollander for 45 min and them formed into sheets.
Gampi fiber due to its higher lignin content was digested with 10% NaOH for 4 h at a liquor ratio of 15. The pulp was bleached with H-P 2-stage, using sodium hypochlorite as the first stage at 40℃ for 4 h. After washing, a H2O2 stage at 0.5% and 40℃ for 2 h was followed. After washing the pulp was beaten with a Hollander for 45 min and formed into sheets.
The formed sheets were tested for water absorbency and after accelerated aging tests using dry heat and light irradiation, the sheets were tested for brightness and folding endurance changes. The sheets were then used to mount artworks and observed for the overall performances. The following conclusions could be obtained:
1. Pineapple fiber required the least amounts of cooking and bleaching chemicals and produced sheets with good brightness, minimal fiber damages and high strengths.。
2. After accelerated aging, the pineapple sheets retained higher folding endurance and maintained higher brightness.
3. Sheets made of pineapple fiber are smooth and glossy which was conducive to the preservation of the artwork on them.
4. Sheets made of pineapple fiber had poor water absorbency, which affected the paste concentration used in mounting. Summarizing the above, based on digestion performance, bleaching conditions, and various properties of the resulting sheets, pineapple fiber with the exception of poorer water absorbency were the best among the 3 kinds of sheets examined. Upon improving its water absorbency property, it will definitely be a superior mounting paper raw material.
