Cinnamaldehyde(Cin) and eugenol(Eug) are good antimicrobials, however, their volatility complicates their application. Hence, microencapsulation of Cin and Eug with b-cyclodextrin (β-CD) was studied at 18 different oil : β-CD percent weight ratios. The 16.7:83.3 ratio (CLO:β-CD) showed the highest Cin content; The 37.5:62.5 ratio (CLO:β-CD) showed the highest Eug content. The weight loss percentage of Cin and Eug were 40.57 and 73.68% respectively during 28 days, while the weight loss percentage of the Eug microcapsules was only 11.82 to 7.65% during the same exposure time. It appeared that microcapsulation did decrease the velocity of the essential oil. The durability of Cin and Eug microcapsules-treated wood were evaluated by soil bed test and wood agar test. The results from the 4-months-soil bed test showed that the treated wood processed good durability, while the results of the wood agar test will be finished on Feb. 2014.
