Phenology and growth study of two tree ferns species, Cyathea spinulosa and Cyathea lepifera, started in April, 2011 in Fushan Experimental Forest. The preliminary result showed that, the phenology time of trophophyll and sporophyll were significantly different for both Cyathea spinulosa and Cyathea lepifera; and the leave-flushing of the sporophyll was significantly earlier than the trophophyll. The spore-release stage of both Cyathea spinulosa and Cyathea lepifera were extremely concentration in August and September , the typhoon season in Fushan. It is probably because that typhoon often bring a lot of rainfall, and create canopy gap in forest, which increase the success ratio of reproduction and regeneration to tree fern. The mean lifespan of Cyathea spinulosa (7.30 months) is higher than Cyathea lepifera (6.90 months), while the annual mean leave turnover ratio of Cyathea lepifera (24 pinna/year) is higher than Cyathea spinulosa (19 pinna/year). It demonstrated the inverse correlation of the lifespan and the turnover-rate of the leaves.
