Digitization of forest landscape scenery assessment

Abstract
The goals of final report of 2010 include: (1) continue to construct the data bank comprising the collection of application cases related to forest scenic esthetic evaluation from Taiwan and other countries. (2) continue to collect the application cases on digitalizing forest scenic and simulation techniques from Taiwan and other countries, analysis of software, and the relative data bank construction. (3) establish appropriate mode of forest esthetic assessment and design. (4) establish assessment system of forest landscape design. (5) continue to process investigation and analysis of forest esthetics by using questionnaire survey. (6) continue to modify plant 3D model. (7) continue to modify the virtual reality simulation of forest landscape and the website for the forest esthetics study and practical utilization.
The main results of this project are as following :
(1) The construction of data bank comprising the collection of application cases relative to forest esthetic evaluation, application cases on simulation techniques of forest landscape. Total 61 articles and case studies have been collected.
(2) It was shown that respondents preferred the scenery of Taiwania plantation compared to that of broad-leaf forest in this study.
(3) All cognitive factors did show higher averaging scores in the scenery of Taiwania plantation compared to those of broad-leaf forest but diversity and complex in this study.
(4) In the regression analysis of cognitive factors to scenic preference and beautiful scenery, it was shown that “comfortable” of cognitive factors had positive effect on scenic preference and beautiful scenery. Preference of light intensity had positive effect on scenic preference and beautiful scenery in the type of Taiwania plantation.
(5) It is suggested that cognitive factors including comfortable, naturalness, beautiful scenery are important core elements in the scenic management of both forest type. Furthermore, operating higher harmony, diversity, preference of light intensity, utilization and lower complex will be good to construct a more pleasure scenery of Taiwania plantation type, In addition, operating higher levels of openness, harmony, representative and utilization will be good to construct a more pleasure scenery of broadleaf forest type.
(6) Tree image and terrain data was adjusted to approach real situations. Furthermore, Google Earth was replaced by Unity as a tool to displaying the outcome of virtue reality simulation.
(7) In the virtue reality simulation of nursery area located in SHAN-PING Forest Ecological Park, considering the results of forest esthetic investigation, the simulation of on-site planning was shown by using Unity platform.
(8) The website containing the functions of on line forest esthetics survey, research report and simulation display was constructed and opened to the public.
