Abstract
"The purpose of this project is to collect variety certification data relating to two kinds of Taiwan trees with high economic potential from new variety certification rule announced by UPOV, we try to summarize and amend in order to establish suitable new variety certification method for Taiwan native trees with high economic potential. The other purpose is to set up facilities according to the law and related regulations for further isolated field trials. Isolated field trails for different transgenic trees will be carry out to promote the commercialization. In the isolated field-test, genetic characteristics of transgenic trees, stabilities of transgene expression and assessment of biosafety will be investigated.
In last year, variety certification rules and test guidelines for new plant variety protection announced by UPOV were collected, and the draft of test guidelines and the table for characteristics for Nageia nagi (Thunb.) O. Ktze. varieties was established. Several commercial varieties of N. nagi were collected and cultivated in greenhouse in order to investigate the growth characteristics and amend the drafts following the observation results. The design of isolated test field facilites for further bio-safety assessment of transgenic trees was completed. The soil nutrition analysis, plant investigation and the survey of the topography were completed. Preparation works such as tree transplantation, land preparation and necessary works for soil and water conservation were all completed by the end of last year. The purposed progresses of this research in this year are 1) Collect and cultivate more N. nagi varieties for further characteristic investigations 2) A one year-round investigation of 8 N. nagi varieties collected ans cultivated last year will be carried out, and the drafts of test guideline and table of characteristics were amended following the investigation results. 3) The first test field will be set up; meanwhile, the irrigation, drainage and water treatment systems will be completed. The first phase of lab and office reconstructions will also be scheduled in this year."
