  • Date of declaration:2011-12-29
Introduction

Lienhuachih Forest Watershed Management Education Area is an outdoor education zone in the Lienhuachih research area. It lies on the road to experimental watershed 2 and 3. It comprises 12 display areas with information on water and soil conservation.

Display Areas
Forest weather station

The station has many instruments for collecting weather data: rainfall, temperature, wind speed and direction, evaporation, sunlight radiation, etc.

Weir

To measure water flow in the drainage basin, and how it changes over time, there is a compound weir (v-notch for low flow and rectangular weir for high flow conditions).

Crib retaining wall

These walls strengthen road embankments. They are constructed out of reinforced concrete blocks stacked to form an outer wall, which is then filled with loose rock.

Sandwich retaining wall

These walls strengthen road embankments. They have a concrete rock face, backfilled with concrete and pebbles.

L-shaped ditch
L-shaped ditch

Where roads curve on mountainsides, an L-shaped concrete ditch is built to drain the runoff from the slope and the road surface.

Crib check dam
Crib check dam

These dams prevent ditch erosion. They are constructed out of reinforced concrete blocks stacked to form a box shape, which is then filled with loose rock.

The Lienhuachih outdoor education zone is open to the public, but it is also a site for education and exchange for Taiwanese colleges and overseas institutions. Through links with educational institutions, it plays an important role in soil and water conservation projects, and in hydrological research.
