Abstract

This study explores the application of Moso bamboo (Phyllostachys edulis (Carrière) J. Houz.) for the design and manufacture of outdoor recreational equipment, focusing on key factors in design and processing, promoting bamboo’s diversified use. Through analysis of material properties and design concepts using affinity diagrams and product improvement tools, the study highlighted Moso bamboo’s notable physical and mechanical properties, which allow it to be utilized to create safe, durable, and sustainable outdoor equipment. Design principles, including safety, durability, functionality, and comfort, were detailed and applied. The study also addresses potential weaknesses of using Moso bamboo, suggesting areas for improvement and consideration during the design process. The findings provide theoretical insights and practical guidance for future applications of bamboo for outdoor products, contributing to the development of sustainable design industries.
